Learning the Basic Computer course book

  • This tutorial is for people who have never used a computer before. It often simplifies things too much, and every technical detail is left out on purpose. This book isn't helpful for experts, and it needs to be corrected. In this tutorial, the new user is always assumed to be male to keep things simple. The computer uses many different devices to store and move data permanently. These devices vary greatly in what they can do, how much they cost, how fast they are, and how portable they are.
  • The most common type is the internal hard disk, which is usually inside the computer box and can't be moved. SSD Solid State Drives (SSDs) are slowly making their way into the market. The operating system controls the computer's hardware and how people and computers talk to each other. Programs are pieces of software that are used to do specific tasks. For example, Word is used to write documents, Explorer is used to navigate the Internet, and the Calculator is used to do math.
  • Data is everything a user or a program makes (sometimes even the operating system). The ethics and economics of "open source vs. proprietary software" are hot topics among computer scientists. Anyone can look at, use, and significantly change open-source software. When proprietary software like Adobe Acrobat Reader or WinZip is given away for free or as shareware, it comes with a clear legal warning not to change it. Microsoft Windows is the most popular OS on the market.
  • About 57% of computers have it installed. It comes in different versions: Starter and Home Basic, which are cheap but have a lot of restrictions and are mostly used on small notebooks; Home Premium, which is for home users; and Enterprise/Ultimate, which is for professionals and has more network utilities. As of December 2014, most UNIBZ computers are running Windows 8.1. About 21% of computers have it installed. Sometimes, the operating system can become unstable and refuse to do what the user tells it to do.
  • If this happens, you should permanently save the work you are doing. In this book, you'll find the English name for each key and the language that Microsoft's Word and Excel programs use. It's always a good idea to ensure that the list separator is always set to a semicolon. If it is, Excel's functions will function properly. Each storage device is an extensive directory that can be accessed through the My Computer window. Each directory has its own files and directories. When you double-click on a guide, its contents are shown in a new window.
  • When a user selects View from a directory window, they can view files and directories in various ways. In Windows, if you double-click a file, a program typically launches. Windows will prompt the user for the program to use if it is unsure of how to open a particular file. A file is copied when you create a duplicate of it in the same location or a different location with a different name. To link an object to a file or directory, drag the object to the destination.
  • When you delete a directory, it goes to the trash along with all of its files and subdirectories. To compress a group of files and folders, you need a unique program like WinZip, 7-Zip, or IZArc. When you choose "IzArc" or the compression program you have installed and choose something like "Add to Archive File...", a box asks you to name the zip file and where it will go. Choose one of the ways to encrypt, like "AES 128 bit," and give the password. When you double-click on a compressed file, it will open in a window like a directory.
  • Permission is used for each file on a Windows 7 operating system. Select "Properties" and "Security" by clicking the right button on a file or directory. The list of users or groups of users who can access this object is shown in the security dialog box. Users who are not on the list can't access it. A network is a group of devices that talk to each other and share resources. Most of these devices are computers, but they can also be hard drives, phones, printers, and terminals that work on their own.
  • This section will examine the potential pitfalls for a new user. The three main types of computer networks are LAN, WAN, and intranet. A LAN is a collection of computers housed in the same structure or owned by the same person. A virtual private network (VPN) can be used to determine whether a computer that is not a LAN member can be trusted. There are no wires in a wireless network. Instead, computers communicate with one another using radio signals.
  • To calculate how long it takes to send a file with a size of bytes, divide the connection speed in bits per second (bps) by 8. This returns the byte rate per second. Microsoft Outlook is a commercially available piece of software. It connects to a mail server and runs on the user's computer as a client. Webmail systems are websites that allow you to check your email, send new ones, and read the ones you've already received without having to download or use a client.
